THE NAMM SHOW 2010 Day One...by Denise Vasquez

Today was officially day one of The NAMM show in Anaheim, California

I was really excited about being invited to perform with Daisy Rock Guitars at their booth bright and early this morning 10AM

I've been looking forward to today for months now...

Even my hand injury wouldn't stop me from performing, but that's another story...

My man Randy Martinez and I both had very little sleep as we've been working really hard on some really BIG deadlines...

Writing our book "Sketch Card Mania" for Impact Books, Illustrating sketch cards for various projects like "Topps Star Wars Galaxy V", Acting gigs, commissions, and more!

We went to sleep at 3 AM and set our alarm for 6 AM

Some of you might be thinking at this point

"Ah that's Rock & Roll"

Ha ha ha...more like

The life of a DIY artist who does EVERYTHING themselves...

Creating, research, organizing, writing, corresponding, following up, booking, managing, promoting...

That's only part of what I do in a days work!

Every day I have the pleasure of experiencing the art of juggling

I have to say, doing this for over the span of 15 years, and having a strong work ethic, has certainly helped me develop some serious muti-tasking skills!

Nowadays, reality is, it takes more than just being a talented artist to create opportunities for yourself!

Anyway...Randy & I both slept through two alarms going off at 6 AM!

Thank goodness the garbage man came this morning at around 6:20

I heard him wheeling out the recycle bins, that was my alarm clock
I jumped out of bed, did not go into panic as we had plenty of time and we had prepared everything the night before...

My Daisy Rock Butterfly Bubinga...
Check
My Audix OM5 Microphone
Check
My cables
Check
Business Cards
Check
Postcards
Check
...All packed and ready to go right by the front door...

I was told we would be provided with everything we needed...

BUT

I NEVER go to any gig without my own gear...

I bring my own Guitar, microphone, clip, cables...

ALWAYS show up prepared!

Another thing I decided to prepare the night before was a fresh pot of coffee...

I heated up my coffee, filled my travel mug...

Was showered, dressed, with makeup & all and we were out the door in under a half hour...

I've done this many times!
We were on the road by 7:09 AM

We hit a little traffic when we neared downtown Los Angeles, but as Randy assured me, traffic would open up once we passed downtown...

He was right, thankfully, traffic cleared, the road was open & we were on our way to the Anaheim convention center

We stopped along the way, filled the tank with some gas, grabbed bottled water and some breakfast...performing on an empty stomach is a no no!

We arrived at NAMM quite early which is always nice...

"The early bird gets the worm"

I don't like feeling rushed, or concerning myself with time, so I always make it a point to arrive early!

We gave ourselves plenty of time to park, register, meet up with my Daisy Rock Rep, and wake up...

We met up with my Daisy Rock rep in the Hilton Lobby, got our badges & were told that we couldn't get in until 10AM, so we just chilled, people watched and I meditated until we were called upon

As it was day one, I figured there was a possibility of things being a little hectic...

No expectations on my part

I was just happy to be where I was at that moment!

It seemed like there was a little confusion going on around me...

We arrived at the booth and the stage was not set up yet...

OK...

After being a live performer for most of my life, I've come to experience many realities as far as the technical side of the business...

Like the title of my upcoming album says

"LIFE HAPPENS"

I truly live by my motto:

It's not what happens in life, it's how you handle it!

I stayed focus & didn't allow what was happening around me to affect me

I remained calm, went with the flow, sat back, watched, and waited...
When things were somewhat ready, I did what I was there to do...
My product demo/performance

Remember how I mentioned moments ago

"ALWAYS BE PREPARED"?!?

Luckily I had my own gear with me, because that's what I ended up using!

I have to admit, for a split second, I felt a moment of disappointed about a few things~I lost some valuable time, didn't have working monitors, and there were some sound issues...

But, Honestly, In the end...

I realized how lucky I was to be where I was...

I totally embraced the moment!

What a GREAT opportunity!

I am truly grateful!

The great news is

I was approached last minute & asked to perform at noon for an hour at the Hilton in the Avalon Ballroom!

Heck yes!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time...

When I was finished with my product demo at the Daisy Rock Booth, we were left with little time to make our way over to the Hilton for our next performance

We were told to "Just go there and call so and so when you get there"

I'm really good at following directions so I did what I was told

Randy & I were making our way out of the convention center with our guitars when we were stopped at the door by security and not allowed to exit

Apparently we needed paperwork for our instruments or some wristband that would allow us to go in and out with our instruments...We were told they were trying something new with the wristbands...

Ohhhhhh, I see, OK...

Would've been nice if we'd known that...

"Knowing is half the battle"

Luckily, my good friend "Where is Randall" from Kyser Capos came to the rescue, and he got someone to assist us

So we make our way to the Avalon Ballroom in the Hilton where we would be performing

Nice stage, nice room, everything was set up and we had a GREAT soundman!!!

We did a soundcheck and everything sounded amazing!

Nice having monitors & a professional musician/soundman working the board

Pure joy!!!

I was in heaven being able to hear every nuance of sound...

My voice...my guitar...Randy's guitar

We played for an hour

It was great!

The more we played, the more people came in, sat and grabbed lunch

During my performance, a woman approached the stage...

She said she was press, and showed me her badge...

She asked my name, told me how much she enjoyed my set, shook my hand and asked for a business card...

I gave her my business card, a postcard & I had some of my Sketch Books with me, so I gave her one of those as well...

NICE!

We had a really great set at the Hilton!

It was a nice impromptu performance & it was truly a nice way to end our day!

THANK YOU DAISY ROCK GUITARS for the GREAT OPPORTUNITIES!!!

Our next performance is on Saturday Jan 16th 3 pm on the B/C Patio

Hope to see you there!

  1. WOW....no wonder you don't get any sleep! Writing extremely comprehensive blogs takes time, missy!

I'm with you on the 'always being prepared' thing, even though it's not about being a Boy Scout anymore!

Sorry I missed the Hilton. Had to work. Glad I saw & heard you at Daisy Rock. Wish I could've hung ouy, but again....my bosses wanted me to get going.

Hopefully I'll see you next year!
