"WILD FIRES" by Denise Vasquez

I've been hearing about the "WILD FIRES" happening around Los Angeles...

I've seen some footage on the news...

But I really didn't have a grasp on the extremity of the fires...

Until...

Yesterday early afternoon...

Little did my man Randy & I know we were about to embark on an adventure!

Our plan for the day was to attend a wedding @The Sapphire Ranch House in Lake Hughes, CA...

We decided to drive...

We stepped out of our apartment & it was really HOT outside!

I was hoping it would be cooler outside so we could drive our convertible with the top down, but that was not an option on a day like today...

Randy connected the ipod to the stereo, got the tunes cranking & then he plugged our starting & destination addresses into his iphone GPS map...

We were on our way...

We drove from the 101, to the 170 to the 5 North to "Bouquet Canyon"...

Randy & I were enjoying our drive...

Great company, great conversation, great music cranking on the stereo, beautiful day...

From a distance, we could see the fires...

We were both mesmerized by the smoke...

Not just the smoke, but the size of the smoke...

From afar, it appeared as if a bomb had been dropped...

The backdrop of the sky was clear sky blue, and the only thing that filled it was a BIG cloud of smoke...

The smoke drew nearer...

It was like a dream...

We were heading in the direction of the fires...

The sky was changing colors...

Blue to pink, to orange, to grey, to purple to black...

The sun turned red...

Were we in a trance?

I felt as if we were hypnotized by the fires as they approached us...

I had never seen anything like this...

I was terrified, yet intrigued!!!

The colors, the contrast...

Here was something so dangerous, so powerful, so damaging...

Yet BEAUTIFUL?!?

The artist within me came out...

I was possessed by the beauty & the terror at the same time...

I had to try to capture what I was seeing & feeling...

I grabbed my iphone & started taking photos...

These photos I took have NOT been enhanced nor manipulated in any way...

These are exactly as I photographed them with my iphone...

I've traveled & have lived in many places around the world...

I've experienced hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, blizzards, rain storms...

Never in my life have I experienced such a natural disaster in such an close up & calm state...

For whatever reason we ended up on that path...

I feel Randy & I were meant to experience & capture these moments...

We made it to the wedding safely, which was not too far from the fires, and made it back home safely later on last night...

Life is a gift & I cherish every moment including these...
