INTERVIEW WITH ACTOR, DIRECTOR, WRITER JAIME GOMEZ

My friend Jaime Gomez has a pretty impressive resume that spans over 20 years...

He does it all~Acting, directing, writing, producing...

Jaime just got finished working on "24" and is kind enough to take a moment from his busy schedule to answer some of my questions...

-Jaime, When did you know you wanted to be an actor?

I WANTED TO BE AN ACTOR AFTER I SAW THE GIRLS CHANGING IN THE SAME DRESSING ROOM AS ME BEFORE MY FIRST PLAY AT RIO HONDO COLLEGE... I WAS LIKE, THEATRE CHICKS ARE COOL!
I AM NOW AN ACTOR!

-When did you start acting?

I STARTED IN JR COLLEGE AFTER A FAILED ATTEMPT AT ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING, I DIDN'T HAVE THE MATH BACKGROUND...

-How long have you been in LA?

ALL MY LIFE... I LOVE LA!

-Did you go to acting school? Where did you train? Did you want to study a specific method? How did you decide what method you wanted to learn? Do you have your own technique? How did that come about?

I STUDIED AT THE JOANNE BARON INSTITUTE. HER MOTTO WAS/IS SHE COULD MAKE A TABLE ACT LIKE A CHAIR!!! SHE TAUGHT ME, STEP BY STEP HOW TO ACT... SHE DID 10 YRS WITH BILL ESBERG IN NY WHO WAS TRAINED BY SANFORD MEISNER. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I EVER STUDIED AND IT TRULY CHANGED MY LIFE... IT WAS LIKE THERAPY, FEELING MY FEELINGS, ANSWER AND LISTENING AND AGAIN IT WAS FULL OF BEAUTIFUL GIRLS! OVER THE YEARS I'VE MADE THE TECHNIQUE MY OWN. KNOWING MY OWN LIMITATIONS AS WELL AS BEING AWARE OF MY STRENGTHS IS INVALUABLE... SELF AWARENESS AND USING YOU AS YOUR INSTRUMENT... IT'S TAKEN ME YEARS TO FIGURE OUT AND EVERY DAY I AM STILL LEARNING...
ITS LIFE, REAL AND TRUE... ACTING IS LIFE, REAL EMOTION IN AN IMAGINARY CIRCUMSTANCE. NOT A FEELING HAS EVER BEEN FELT SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME THAT WE TOO DO NOT SHARE... IF THE EMOTION IS TRUE, THEN IT WILL APPEAR TRUE ONSTAGE OR IN FILM OR WHEREVER...

-Do you have a favorite teacher in LA?

YES, GOD.

-What was your first performance?

"AT LEAST SHE'S STILL A VIRGIN" AT THE PLAZA DELA RAZA THEATRE.

-Do you have a preference: theater, film, tv?

I LOVE THE THEATRE BUT HAVE BEEN FOCUSSING ON FILM/TV...
I HAVE BILLS!! HA! BUT MY DREAM IS TO RETURN TO THE THEATRE... LIVE IN NY... WE'LL SEE...

-What are some of the professional gigs you've had as an actor?

A BUNCH... imdb

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004968/

-You've also done some teaching, directing, producing...tell us about that...

TEACHING IS FUN WHEN YOU HAVE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEARN... I LOVE TO TEACH AND LEARN...
DIRECTING HAS TO DO WITH ONE OF MY TRUE LOVES WHICH IS PHOTOGRAPHY, MY OTHER LOVE HAS ALWAYS BEEN WRITING SO IT'S A WAY TO DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME... TO WRITE/ACT/DIRECT IS THE DREAM SITUATION FOR ME... PRODUCING IS MAKING IT HAPPEN!

-You're also a filmmaker? How did you get into making movies? Was it a natural progression for you?

MAKING MOVIES IS WHAT I DO... I CAN ALSO DIG DITCHES BUT I PREFER FILM! IT IS NATURAL, IT'S HOME TO ME... IT'S MY DARMA.

Name some of the movies/Documentaries you made yourself...

"IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE", "LIVE WITH IT" "IT'S ALL IN THE SONG" AND VARIOUS SHORTS, VIDEOS...

-You recently worked on a film that was nominated at "Method Fest" tell us about that?

IT'S CALLED, "16 TO LIFE", A COMING OF STROY ABOUT A SMALL TOWN GAL TURNING 16... I PLAY A GUY IN A WHEELCHAIR WHO RETURNS TO TOWN AND FINDS HIS FIRST LOVE TOO... TERESA RUSSELL. A LOVELY MOVIE I'M REALLY PROUD OF!

-Do you have a preference: acting, directing, producing?

ACTING IS THE BEST, DIRECTING IS HARD BUT FUN AND PRODUCING IS PURE HARD WORK...

-If you were able to get three wishes~You could chose any 3 people to work with, who would they be & why?

MY DAD CUZ HE'S GONE, OLIVIER CUZ HE'S THE MAN AND BRANDO CUZ HE LOVED TO EAT... I LOVE GOOD FOOD!

-What advice do you have for any new actor trying to break into the business?

QUIT! IF YOU'RE NOT 110% PERCENT COMMITED AND CAN DO NO OTHER THING THEN DO IT... IF YOUR WILLING TO STRUGGLE FOR YEARS THEN DO IT! IF YOU'RE WILLING TO LIVE LIKE A MONK WHILE YOUR FRIENDS ARE MAKING GREAT MONEY DOING REGULAR JOBS THEN DO IT... IF YOU LOVE IT THEN DO IT... AND GET USED TO BEING TOLD NO!

-Anything else you would like to add?

NAW... I'VE SAID ENOUGH... OH YEAH! IF YOUR ON A REALITY SHOW YOU'RE NOT AN ACTOR! PEACE AND BLESSINGS!
JAIMEG
